Charles Viscount Townshend (1674-1738) was Secretary for the Northern department, the seat of the Jacobite trouble. James 1st Earl Stanhope (1673-1721) was a statesman who also took a leading part in securing the Hanoverian succession. John Erskine, 6th or 11th Earl of Mar (1675-1732) was a Jacobite leader. Sir Roger Townshend (d. 1493) was a judge and founder of the Townshend family from Norfolk, England which included many distinguished statesmen and soldiers. One of his descendants, John Townshend, married the daughter of Nathaniel Bacon (1547-1622) who was made sherrif of Norfolk in 1599 and knighted in 1604. The records described below appear to relate to Nathaniel BACON (1547? - 1622) of Stiffkey, Norfolk, the second son of Sir Nicholas Bacon (1509 - 1579), Lord Keeper. He was admitted to Gray's Inn 1562 December 15; M.P. for Tavistock 1571 and 1572, for Norfolk 1584 and 1593, for Lynn 1597; Sheriff of Norfolk 1599; Knighted 1604 July 21.
