Charles Viscount Townshend (1674-1738) was Secretary for the Northern department, the seat of the Jacobite trouble. Sir Roger Townshend (d. 1493) was a judge and founder of the Townshend family from Norfolk, England which included many distinguished statesmen and soldiers. One of his descendants, John Townshend, married the daughter of Nathaniel Bacon (1547-1622) who was made sherrif of Norfolk in 1599 and knighted in 1604.
